Backstory

Nick Winston was a brilliant young scientist who had a fascination for the ways that medical science could improve the human race. While working at Stanford University on Earth, performing research on this subject, he met Nightshade, who was an undergraduate student. Learning from her adoptive parents that she was actually of alien origin, born on the planet Biaka, he discovered that her genes provided options for improvement of the race, because of their inherent parapsychological powers.

He swept the young woman off her feet and married her, and they moved away from Earth, to a colony some distance away, so he could remove the influence of the Stewartsons. He secured yet another research job in the sciences while she started law school. They had children fairly quickly, because Nick was anxious to study the results of a human-Biakan cross breeding.

The first pregnancy yielded a set of male twins. When they were born, Nick paid for a very special delivery staff, who went along with his scheme to tell his wife that one of the boys had died. She was given the boy named Chad, and Nick hid the other from her in his labs, to continue experimentation with a free rein. This child grew up to become Agent Alpha One.

Not satisfied with his captive subject, Nick then began to experiment on Chad, creating a child with many genius abilities and paranormal powers. At first, Nightshade was proud and excited to see her son achieve so much at a young age, but after their next child, Susie, was born, she began to see an almost immediate decline in the girl's health. Taking her to an outside doctor, she discovered that Nick had been manipulating Susie as well, but in a negative manner. Infuriated, she left Nick and took Chad and Susie, divorcing him. Susie did not survive what Nick had done and died before the age of 4.

Undaunted, Nick continued his experiments for many years, transforming AA1 into a dark and sinister figure who alternately hated and obeyed him. His technique eventually became so refined and well known that he published several professional papers that were considered state of the art in the field, one with Dr. Eugene Boring.

After many years had passed, Nick finally discovered his ex-wife, now at the United Empire of Planets, and found he had a grown son,Alex Erc. He abducted Alex, needing some of his genetic material to repair a deficiency in his own genetic makeup caused by experimentation gone bad. Alex was rescued, and a true hatred developed between father and son. Fixated on his former wife, Nick returned to UEP and later to MU again and again, trying to win her love once again. He would be destroyed each time, but a new clone begun on his hidden station, triggered by the death of the former clone.

In later years, the clones have grown less attached to Nightshade, and have diversified in nature, due to the erratic makeup of the clones. There has been Nicky Winston, the polyester-suit wearing 1970s weatherman, Charles Winston, who was the only Winston clone ever respected by Piper, Nick the Mafia Don, and many more. He has worked extensively with other MU villains Markail Bell and Marco Pasella. The one unifying principle in the last few years has been that when he appears on station there is usually a contest to see which of the Maquis personnel will have the justification to kill him first.
