Interplexing Interdimensional Rift

General Information
An Interplexing interdimensional rift is a multi-phasic, multi-temporal tear in spacetime. It is capable of transporting a ship or an individual not only through time and space but to other dimensions. One such rift exists in the Trelvan-4 system, where the space station Maquis Universal is located. The interplexing interdimensional rift that exists in the Trelvan system is in the fourth Lagrange point around the planet. A cluster of carbonaceous chrondritic asteroids surround the interplexing interdimensional rift.
It is believed that the original Maquis Universal traveled to this universe by using this method.
Definition of an IPID rift
Interplexing interdimensional rifts are a extremely dangerous spacial anomaly and has been classified by Starfleet Command as a "Type 15 Navigational Hazard". Similar spacial hazards exists with wormholes, mobius inversions and intermittent cyclical vortexes. In the case of the interplexing interdimensional rift, a ship is not only temporally dislocated or spacially displaced but displaced dimensionally as well.
One of the tell-tale signs of a interplexing interdimensional rift is heavy graviton particle emissions, tachyons and soliton wave formation. The severe subspace shear of an interplexing interdimensional rift can cause local subspace microfissures that take many weeks to seal. Furthermore, interplexing interdimensional rifts can be prone to massive quantum fluxes and may create temporal variances that can disrupt the local space-time continuum.
Commonalities with other anomalies
Interplexing interdimensional rifts shares many commonalities with wormholes, temporal rifts and Mobius Inversions. However, they are distinctly different from subspace compression anomalies, subspace vacuoles and subspace sandbars.
More data will be needed on interplexing interdimensional rifts but due to the unstable and unpredictable nature of interplexing interdimensional rifts, that data will be extremely hard to obtain.
Encounters with IPID rifts
It is hypothosized by quantum theorists that interplexing interdimensional rifts are inherently artificial in nature and may be indicative of transdimensional attack. It is suspected that there may be a interplexing interdimensional rift in the Azure Nebula in the Alpha Quadrant that might possibly have a connection to the Borg, however, data on this rift is classified by Starfleet.
Starfleet Command has recently issued orders that interplexing interdimensional rifts be marked by navigational markers and has forbidden crewed exploration of them. Additionally, technology used in such crossovers has been classified and knowledge of such technology has been restricted to starship senior staff only.
Recently, forces from one of the known "mirror universes", the Terran Empire recently used technology to open a interplexing interdimensional rift to this universe. Another crossing occured in the middle of 2415 when the MRV Aquila entered into our universe.
Many years ago, Starfleet Temporal Command established a observational station in the Trelvan system near the interplexing interdimensional rift. The station, under the command of Captain Alex Erc, acts as a local spacetime coordinator as well as an observervational post on the interplexing interdimensional rift. What actually happens on this station is unknown as the station and the role Starfleet Temporal Command plays here has been highly classified.
