Backstory
Isis came to the station several years ago to practice law. She got an office on the planet, just for ease of building a client base, but took many cases on the station, including several of Carrie Keeler’s criminal matters, as well as JR-76’s piracy charges, both the first and second. She was also part of the AI Rights controversy.
She has always been a die-hard feminist, and determined to succeed on her own without the help of a man. She and Fionn MacCummail met on the station, and were platonic companions for some time, traveling together, and generally “keeping company’ without the strings neither of them wanted.
One trip they made to Risa, however, they had a bit to drink and got intimate, and she found soon after she was pregnant. Knowing Fionn had no intentions to start a family, and being a good Catholic, she consulted with a priest who told her she could place the child for adoption without committing any further sin. He arranged for her to go to a birthing facility which had the capability of aging and delivering the child in a matter of days. The girl child was born, and Isis left her there to be placed in a good home, having never mentioned any of this to Fionn.
Several weeks later, she was contacted by an angry woman, the adoptive mother, who claimed that the child Isis had given up was defective and demanding that she come take the child back. Fionn’s mother Eileen was on station at the time, and Isis tearfully confessed the deception and her desperation under the circumstances. Eileen became her friend and advocate and helped her reveal the truth to Fionn, who though surprised, stepped up to the plate and made it a family.
The child was born with a serious hearing loss, and Isis hired a teacher, Robert Ashton, to come work with the child daily. Ashton and Isis’ secretary, Laura Dupre, eventually became a couple as well, though that story ended in tragedy. Finola, also called the “Twink”, is now a precocious seven year old who is both good with tools, like her father, and cultivates a sharp tongue, like her mother.
Isis has fallen in love with Eileen and her Irish hometown. The family visits there frequently. On one occasion, Isis was asked to negotiate a settlement in a village-wide tax dispute. The man who’d originally owned the land, and had sold many of the properties to the residents, was now trying to collect up back taxes, and had threatened to evict everyone, including Fionn’s mother. Isis went to meet with the man, who thought he had her handled, but instead she outsmarts him, thoroughly reducing him through shame. On the way back to the local pub to meet her clients, she stops at a local butcher shop and buys a pair of bull’s testicles, and puts them in a jar with some water, then takes the jar in and sets it on the counter. “He won’t be bothering you again,” she promises. True to her word, the landlord folds and everyone gets to keep their property. Isis becomes a local hero.
