A retcon (retroactive continuity) is a change made to a previously existing story, so that events that had been previously established occurred in a different way, or did not occur.

For example, many events in Star Trek: Enterprise can be seen as a retcon, such as providing a suitable explanation for how Klingons obtained their flat foreheads in TOS.
