Backstory
Riviera has not shared much of her background with her shipmates, or with anyone. She is quite paranoid and suspicious of others, and suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Riviera Brown’s mildly pleasant manner hid a much darker side. The big woman’s single relationship had been devastating – her husband had tried to control her with verbal jabs and brute force, then resorted to drugs when she had gotten strong enough to fight him physically. She’d hurt him, badly, when she’d finally had the chance. Her Confederation superiors, aware of the situation, hadn’t forced her from the service, but ordered an immediate transfer away from her victim.
Themes Rogers had needed an officer at the time, and took her on. They’d had one conversation about the incident, during which Rogers satisfied himself that it had been an isolated occurrence. Since then she’d been a model officer and a valuable part of his crew. She’d told him, “Don’t need a man. Never would, uh-uh. Men, they just a part of the journey, just like women and dogs and furniture. That’s all.”
