Welcome to the Maquis Universal science fiction RPG! We hope you’ve had a chance to stop by one of the Chat Complexes and have been intrigued by our collection of wacky characters and fun sims!

This is a draft document. If you have any questions, please ask an experienced participant.

We use many of the common rules from other RPGs. Both Player (PC) and Non-Player (NPC) characters may be created at your discretion.

  1. Choose your character’s name, and select colors for nick and text in hexadecimal format (examples of sites that have a listing of colors can be found at[1] and ________). When you are ready, you may go to one of the chat complexes and enter your information here:

(need visual of little chat window with boxes for name, colors, etc)

If you choose, you may enter also an email or URL where indicated. In Chat Complex 5, there is a box where description of actions or appearances can be entered separately, as a test, to see if chatters like this feature.

  2. Characters that our players select come from a number of different venues. Most are based in some science fiction universe from television, movies or literature. Obviously we do not have permission to take existing characters from such productions, because those characters are the property of their legal owners. (language here about trademark/copyright etc) However, we often have players who come from universes such as those on Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica, any of the Treks, Star Wars, so that their frame of reference is easily defined for the other characters.

For example, if your character announces that he is Rayf, a fictional resident of Bajor after the occupation, then one might imagine something of his appearance and demeanor. The same if he is a Nausicaan, a telepath, an assassin droid, an elf, an anime princess.

  3. Though it should go without saying, Players should not create names for their characters that might offend on the grounds of sexual, religious, hate or racial ideas.
  4. If you wish, you may add your actively played character to the MU wiki [2]. An example template has been created for your assistance in fleshing out a well-rounded character. Feel free to be creative and share as much about your character’s background, history, marital status, goals and dreams as you like.
  5. If you wish, you may add a description of any ship belonging to your character in the MU wiki, complete with technical and physical attributes.
  6. While characters often, in this rowdy space station setting, have the opportunity for confrontation, you may not inflict deadly force on another PC without the permission of that character’s typist. NPCs may be played by anyone, and may be wounded or killed with discretion. (Often NPCs are bystanders, computers, EMH units, etc. Be sure you know who you’re dealing with.)
  7. One important function of character description is to show your character’s strengths and weaknesses. A character, once created, can not exceed its given abilities and must have at least one fatal weakness. Godmoding is frowned on and not well tolerated. Also be aware that many others have been simming here for years, and have developed respect for and relationship with each other. It may take some time for your character to gain the attention of others, but be respectful and persistent, and you'll be part of the group in no time.

As the chat is a role-playing chat, real-life conversations should be moved to instant messaging format. Occasional OOC statements are tolerated, particularly if amusing.

Questions about these rules or other facets of MU can be directed to any of the following characters/typists: Shadi Erc, Chase Austin, Kairal N’Tori, Erc, IG-76, Guy Brecht.

  8. Most of all, have fun!
